Crotch curiosity

  Sunday, 18l 07 l 2010 Source:  The Sunday Times

Question: My two-year-old son scratches at the crotch area on his diapers. There are no rashes or redness there. What could be the problem?

Answer: It is not uncommon for boys at this age to touch their crotch or penile area. They are curious and often explore their bodies and some do derive pleasurable sensation. It is a transient phase and mothers should not overtly express shock or scold them, especially in public places.

But do ensure that there is no redness in the area and that he is not crying during urination, which may be due to an infection.

Question: My baby boy has severe eczema. I apply moisturiser all over his body, double-rinse his clothes and use only cotton clothes, sheets and blankets. I apply 2.5 per cent hydrocortizone on him when the condition
gets bad. What might be the cause and what can I do about it?

AInfantile eczema can be difficult to manage. There are many causes of eczema and it is sometimes difficult to pinpoint the actual cause. In Singapore, the weather plays an important role. Heat and sweat can irritate a baby’s skin and worsen eczema.

House dust mites and pollutants have also been found to be common triggers. Over-washing with strong detergents is not necessary and may aggravate his eczema.

The appropriate use of mild steroid creams can alleviate it, and the constant application of moisturisers is important.

Food can worsen eczema, but be careful in identifying food allergies. The child might subsequently be deprived of important nutrients.

Consult a paediatrician or allergist to identify the causes of his eczema flare-ups.
