What is the Singapore Sleep Awareness Week 2010?

Do you or your loved ones experience sleeping problem such as insomnia, snoring, periodic limb movements (PLM), excessive daytime sleepiness or disturbed sleep?

You may think that these are minor problems everyone experiences. On average, we spend one third of our lives in slumberland. For something that we do naturally, we know surprisingly little about it. Many of us are guilty of sacrificing our sleep for a myriad of seemingly compelling reasons.

The Singapore Sleep Society is organizing the Singapore Sleep Awareness Week (SSAW) from 19-28 March 2010, in celebration of the World Sleep Day. Themed Good Sleep for Good Health, SSAW is the first campaign in Singapore to increase public awareness of sleep-related issues, the importance of good sleep, what are some common sleep disorders, what options are best to treat them, and to dispel myths.

So join us in this 10-day campaign featuring sleep-related activities and start making the first step towards Good Sleep for Good Health!

  Did you know that...

  1. People who live in cities are getting less sleep. For example, from 2001 to 2009 an annual sleep survey showed a decrease in self-reported average hours of sleep from 7.0 to 6.7 hours.
  2. You don't have to take naps to make it harder to sleep at night; just spending time on the bed in the day (e.g. surfing the net or reading magazines) is enough.
  3. Sleep deprivation is a more common problem than insomnia.
  4. Prolonged sleep deprivation can worsen your alertness and brain function. A person with sleep deprivation may perform even worse than someone who is drunk.
  5. Using alcohol or sleeping pills to sleep can result in addiction.
  6. Women tend to be more prone to insomnia
  7. Lack of sleep affects the body's metabolism, increasing the chance of becoming obese.
