What is lactose intolerance?
Lactose intolerance arises when the body is unable to digest milk sugar (lactose) in dairy products because of a shortage of the enzyme produced by cells in the small intestine. When unprocessed lactose moves to the colon, it interacts with normal intestinal bacteria and symptoms of lactose intolerance arise.

Lactose intolerance can be hereditary, acquired with age or developed as a result of gastrointestinal disorders.

What are the common symptoms of lactose intolerance?
Common symptoms include bloating, abdominal cramps, nausea, gas and diarrhea that begin about 30 minutes to 2 hours after taking food containing lactose.

How will I know if I am lactose intolerant?
A doctor can use tests to diagnose lactose intolerance but may first recommend eliminating cow’s milk from the diet to see if the symptoms go away.

How is lactose intolerance treated?
No treatment exists to improve the body’s ability to produce lactose, but the symptoms can be controlled by choosing a diet that limits lactose. Majority of older children and adults do not have to avoid lactose completely, but people differ in the amounts and types of food they can handle.

So what should I do if I am lactose intolerant?
Choose your diet carefully to protect your health while making sure that you get enough calcium from the right sources of food.

CALCIUM RICH FOODS
· Dark green vegetables (broccoli)
· Fish (sardines, salmon, tuna)
· Soymilk
· Orange
· Pinto beans
· Tuna
· Lettuce
