| | According to Dr Jason Chia, Consultant Physician, Changi Sports Medicine Centre and Singapore Sports Medicine Centre, if pain or discomfort is experienced during the game or on a regular basis such that it affects daily activities, see a doctor immediately. In most cases, surgery isn’t required, but rest, painkillers, cortisone injections, physiotherapy and infrared or ultrasound therapy may be recommended. 
Rotator cuff impingement Symptoms: Pain in the shoulder or upper arm during a golf swing, and when raising the arm overhead. Treatment: Physiotherapy, and in rare instances, surgery. Back pain at the lower lumbar spine Symptoms: Pain that can come from various sites including the muscles, intervertebral disc, ligaments and nerve impingement. Treatment: Physiotherapy, and in rare cases, surgery. Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow Symptoms: Pain at the tendon of the extensor muscles of the forearm, and the left lateral elbow. It is caused by tight grip of the club, overuse, or hitting the club on the ground. Treatment: Rest, applying ice to the affected area, stretching and forearm strengthening, and cortisone injection in some cases. Other measures include a change in grip or swing, and using a tennis elbow brace. Tendinopathy Symptoms: Wrist pain due to overuse. Treatment: Usually non-surgical; requires a period of immobilisation, anti-inflammatory medication, strengthening and stretches. Re-examine your swing for errors. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms: Numbness and tingling of the fingers, hand weakness and clumsiness. Treatment: Rest, medication, splinting and surgery. Hamate bone fracture Symptoms: Pain and tenderness in left palm, numbness in ring and little fingers. Treatment: Surgery and casting. | |
