My Super Breakfast - oatmeal, dried fruits and konbu powder

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Having a nutritious breakfast is not a difficult thing. I start off the day with a tablespoon of DIY fruit enzyme. It helps in the bowel movement. Then I will eat one portion of fruit because I don’t have time to juice. It can be kiwi, banana, papaya, orange or dragon fruit.

Dried Fruits

1 tbsp of DIY fruit enzyme to start the day. Click here for DIY fruit enzyme article.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal

Ingredients

  • Oats – can buy from supermarket. However, organic oat is almost the same price as those sold in supermarket. So I buy organic type. I grind into powder so that it can be consumed easily. $5.70/kg pack
  • Black sesame powder – organic type is much more delicious and fragrant. $4.60/300g. Be careful NOT to buy those with added sugar.
  • Brown rice powder – Must be NO sugar. Can buy from medical store. About $5.00/ 400g. Very fragrant.
  • Lecithin – organic $6.00/400g
  • Flaxseed powder - organic $2.90/250g
  • Konbu powder – organic $4.10/50g
  • Apricot seed powder – buy from medical store $2.00/150 – 200g. Grind into powder.

The ingredients can be flexible. I can have all or some of them. When I learn something new, I will add on to the basic group.

Add filtered water (room temperature) to dissolve the ingredients. Add warm water later and the texture will turn slightly thick. It’s more palatable this way. Apricot seed powder cannot be dissolved, hence, I add this after the mixture is ready.

Nuts, seeds and dried fruits

Oatmeals

Nuts

Sunflower seeds, pine nuts, almond nuts, walnuts can be bought in medical store. It is better to buy in small quantities and keep in separate containers in the fridge. It is also better to buy from the big container, taste and choose, and request to pack in 100g. Do not buy pre-packed, as the quality is not known.

I prefer to buy raisins from the organic vendor, as the quality is much better with only a small price difference.

Other dried fruits can be figs, cranberries, blueberries, apricot, etc. Honey can be added for a sweeter taste.

Nutritional Value:
The ingredients are all rich in minerals - calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and vitamins, fibre etc, etc, which I do not know in details but I know they are good for health. My body can accept it very well. I seldom fall sick and I know it has built up my immunity.

Konbu powder

Konbu powder is a new item which I started at the end of 2009. Two years after treatment, I was asked to do a blood test which concluded that I was low in thyroid function. I was asked if I wanted to start on medication, which would be for life. I said a BIG NO. I cannot imagine putting so much drugs into my body for life. My body is not made for that. And I don’t want to spend money on drugs. I would rather spend on something with real benefit to my health. I read up and linked up the hormone thyroxine to iodine, which is found in seaweed. People in Okinawa Japan consume a lot of seaweed and enjoy longevity. As I seldom get to eat seaweed, I decided to take it in supplement form as konbu powder.

Too much of oatmeal will make my stomach bloat. Hence, the portion is small and easy to consume. However, this is only part of my super breakfast. My carbo/energy intake will be two pieces of wholemeal bread with cucumber, tomato and DIY fruit enzyme residue which I blended to make fruit jam.

Konbu Powder

Wow, my super breakfast is so healthy! No unhealthy oil, no MSG, no white sugar, no chemical salt, but all the healthy oil omega-3 and omega-6 from the nuts and seeds, natural sugar from dried fruits, and lots of nutrients.

It is easy to make. Just add the ingredients to the bowl, add water and mix well. It is also affordable. If we buy a pack of fried mee hoon or nasi lemak, it will cost about $2/each. For 30 days, it will cost $60 a month. This $60 if spent on the ingredients above, can last for more than two months. A little effort pays a long way, not only for the pocket but also for health.
