Run The Race of Life

But what turned out as a Death Sentence became a Life Transformer

"I have always been an exercise fanatic since JC days. When serving in the army I was running competitively. I always feel life is great until cancer struck and the whole picture changed. But what turned out as a death sentence became a life transformer. Terry Fox once said "Cancer gave me the courage I never had before – the courage to conquer with one leg what I couldn't even faced with two”, and I could not agree with him more.

It has never occurred to me that I could do a marathon. Even in my 20’s I thought it was impossible but cancer does give me courage and I like what I am seeing in me. Cancer does leave scars and one of the most daunting difficulty during the marathon is the dryness of mouth as a result of the damaged salivary glands and shooting needle like pain in the arms and at the finger tips because of impaired nerves of the neck.

Sometimes Winning is just about Finishing

Despite this little setback I believe God still does not make a piece of junk. I realized too that winning is not about finishing first. Sometimes winning is just about finishing. I have done six marathons in the last 3 years completing my full marathon and 2 triathlons last year. This has not only improve my cardio but also build a stronger immunity, physical dexterity and definitely helping to minimize my side effects from the treatment.

I hope I can be an inspiration too to the 100 + nose cancer survivors in the 3 NPC Support Group at NCCS, TTSH and NUH. If time permits I hope to start an Endurance Sport Cancer Survivor Group.  If any of you are interested to join me to start the endurance sports group please do email me. I am excited to work alongside with you. To all the cancer suvivors out there – WE can live a life FAR GREATER than cancer… Man its JUST cancer !!"
