All Gummed Out - Gum Disease

Source: Article appeared in Singapore Health Jan-Feb 2010 issue, a bi-monthly publication of SGH and SingHealth Group.

Some 90 per cent of Singaporean adults suffer from some form of gum disease. More alarming is that these problems stem mainly from neglect.

"A recent survey revealed that only six per cent of the adult population visit their dentist once a year," said Dr Lewis Lee, president of Singapore Dental Association.

The most common forms of gum disease are gingivitis and periodontitis, said Dr Tan Ching Ching, Associate Consultant, Periodontics Unit, Department of Restorative Dentistry, diabetes and other illnesses.
