Five Things to know about LASIK

1. LASIK can be used to treat both myopia (short-sightedness) and hyperopia (long-sightedness). The latest machines are programmed so that there is less movement of the eye, resulting in a better outcome.

2. If you are over 21, you are suitable for LASIK as your eyesight would have stabilized by this age. You must also be free of eye disease and not have any unstable medical condition. Pregnant women are advised to wait until after their baby is born. With new advancements, even those with myopia above 1,500 degrees are suitable candidates.

3. LASIK takes 15 minutes, requires only anaesthetic eye drops and is painless. It is done as a day surgery procedures and there is no need for you to be admitted to hospital. You will experience better vision within 24 hours with gradual improvements over the next few days. Your vision will stabilize in 1 to 3 months.

4. Common side effects are dry eyes, light sensitivity, glare and halos during the first few weeks. However, most will subside over time. Complications arising from infections are rare. In most cases, they are treatable under a skilled surgeon.

5. About 97% of patients with mild to moderate myopia can attain vision of 6/12 (close to perfect vision) or better without spectacles or contact lenses. Those with higher power are usually in this percentile. About 70% will have 6/6, or perfect vision. Despite LASIK, chances are you still need reading glasses for near work or for reading as you get older.
