Want sparkling, healthy eyes? Get them screened regularly. Early detection increases the chance of curing eye disease.

For shiny white teeth, see your dentist regularly to remove surface stains and tartar buildup, and to prevent gum disease.

A simple equation: Proper care adds up to better health. Minus the bad habits and multiply the good ones and you're on the right track to having eyes and teeth you'll be very proud of.

Dazzling Impressions: Feed your eyes with vitamins

 Nutrients  Benefits  Top Sources
Vitamin C Protects against the development and progression of cataracts Broccoli, citrus fruits and melons
Vitamin E Same as above Whole grains, legumes and nuts
Caroteniods Protects against cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) Dark leafy greens such as spinach and kale, and fruits
Zinc Slows the progression of AMD Meat, fish, poultry and dairy products

Everyday eye care tips

  • Insist on sunglasses with proper UV protection to protect against cataracts. Amber, orange and brown lenses are the best.
  • Read under good light to prevent eye strain.
  • After about half an hour of near work such as reading, take a break by looking out into the distance.
  • Get your eyes checked at least once in your 20s, twice in your 30s, every 2 - 4 years in your 40s and 50s, every 1 - 2 years after 65.

Dental tune-up

Sick of hearing the same dental advice on brushing and flossing? Well, here are some tips you may not be aware of:

  • Resist snacking between meals. Try chewing gum instead. Ask your dentist to prescribe gum containing xylitol which actually prevents tooth decay.
  • Pump up your salivary glands, drink water frequently. A dry mouth predisposes you to bad breath and tooth decay.
  • Early decay can be reversed and you may not need to suffer the cycle of drilling and filling. At your next dental checkup, ask your dentist to assess your risk of developing caries.
