Competitive cycling, swimming and brisk walking are some of the activities Mr Lee Ngak Wee, 72, enjoys.
But this sprightly retired crane operator's favourite sport is cycling, which he practises four times a week for at least two hours each time.
He typically cycles from his Jurong West home to Chinese Garden, about 4km away.
“I’ll take my time looking at the birds and scenery. Sometimes, I stop to have tea with my friends,” he said in Mandarin.
He has fallen several times and has been cut by tree branches, but such incidents have not deterred him from pursuing the sport he loves.
Mr Lee, who is married with three adult children, has even taken part in cycling competitions.
Last year, he came in fourth place in a bicycle skills riding competition organised by Jurong Spring and Jurong Green community clubs.
Mr Lee, who believes in staying active, also swims and takes brisk walks at least once a week and is open to trying out new sports. Last year, he tried dragon boating but found it too intense.
To keep his mind agile, he and his friends took up magic tricks at the Jurong Spring community club.
Mr Lee said he realised the importance of being active when at the age of 10 he witnessed a fatal accident – a neighbour was knocked down by a car. This incident spurred him to stay physically and mentally active and cherish life.
