Mr Peter Chow has been an avid bowler for the past 45 years. These days though, he takes breaks between sessions.
This is because the 84-year-old has had heart surgery twice.
“With heart problems, you have to be careful. If you have a slight pain, slow down and rest. Don’t force yourself,” said the father of two adult daughters.
His wife Rosie, 78, first introduced him to the sport in 1965.
Once, in the middle of a bowling session, the retired clerk felt a slight pain in his heart.
“I had forgotten to take my medicine that day and had to stop and rest for a while,” he said.
Being prudent about his heart health has allowed Mr Chow to enjoy the sport thoroughly.
He bowls once a week at Downtown East’s Orchid Bowl with his friends.
He is a member of Golden Bowl, a bowling interest group set up by the NTUC Club for those aged 55 and above.
“I enjoy the game and feel satisfied when I can manoeuvre the ball such that I achieve a difficult spare,” he said.
A spare is when all 10 bowling pins are knocked down in two consecutive tries in the same game.
Mr Chow has been active since he was young. He used to play badminton and table tennis regularly and often rode to Kuala Lumpur on a Norton Dominator 500 motorcycle. He now cycles to nearby places like train stations and the supermarket.
