Two years ago, 75-year-old housewife Madam Chaw Moay took up swimming to stay healthy.
Before she took the plunge, she could not raise her arm above her shoulder without feeling pain.
“The pain gradually disappeared after I started swimming. I can now raise my arm,” she said in Mandarin.
Madam Chaw goes to the Sembawang Community Club Senior Citizens’ Swimming Club every week to swim with her friends.
“My two grandchildren (aged seven and 11) are now older, so I have more time to do what I like,” she said.
While she enjoys swimming, Madam Chaw found learning the strokes challenging.
“I had to learn the breast stroke slowly, like a child learning to walk,” she said.
Nowadays, she can swim half a lap and usually takes a short break to catch her breath before continuing.
Madam Chaw is in the swim in other ways too.
She takes part in aerobics classes every Tuesday and often goes for karaoke sessions with her friends.
“I still feel young and full of energy. I don’t feel I’m that old,” she said.
