Getting your baby to latch on properly is key to breastfeeding successfully
w Get into a comfortable position Whether sitting up or lying down, make sure you have adequate support for your back, arms and feet. There are a variety of positions to breastfeed your baby, so find out which is the most comfortable for you.
w Hold the baby close to you Hold the baby close so that he/she does not have to turn his head to reach your breast. The baby’s nose and mouth should be facing your nipple. Make sure you support your breast, so it doesn’t press on your baby’s chin.
w Latch the baby Encourage your baby to open his mouth wide and pull him close by supporting his back instead of the back of his head. The baby’s chin should drive into your breast, with his nose touching it. If you experience pain, gently detach the baby and try again.
w Bring the baby to nipple height Holding your baby at nipple height is important as it will give support. Leaning over your baby may cause backache, neck and shoulder strain, and sore nipples.
