Mothers who can’t breastfeed for medical reasons, or because they work, can still feed their babies breast milk that has been expressed manually or with a pump.
1 Keep to a daily schedule for pumping milk Take note of the times when you have the most milk and schedule your pumping sessions accordingly. Add an extra session whenever you can, so you will always have an additional supply of milk.
2 Relax It is important to be relaxed while pumping milk. Try to think about your baby instead of fretting over the tasks you have to complete. Pumping sessions are also a good time to take a break from work.
3 Store milk properly Make sure you label expressed milk with the date before storing it in the refrigerator or an insulated lunchbox (if you’re at work). This way, you can ensure that milk pumped earlier will be consumed first. Milk can keep for up to three months if stored in the freezer, and for 48 hours if kept in the general compartment at -40ºC. A bottle of frozen expressed breast milk can be thawed in the fridge by placing it in a cup filled with water at room temperature.
