Pregnancy, not breastfeeding, causes sagging breasts
The truth is that sagging breasts are related to pregnancy, and not breastfeeding per se. As your breasts increase in volume due to pregnancy hormones, the ligaments that support them get stretched. Whether or not you breastfeed, the damage is done. Breasts tend to get more saggy with each subsequent pregnancy.
“The good news is that when you become a breastfeeding mum, the sagging breasts no longer worry you because you know that you have allowed your breasts to develop to their full potential and that you are protecting yourself from breast and ovarian and womb cancer. There is the inner beauty of knowing that you have done what you should for your baby and that does not deteriorate with time“, says Dr Yong Tze Tein, Senior Consultant at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Singapore General Hospital, and President of the Association for Breastfeeding Advocacy (Singapore).
According to research, smoking and age are the two other prime suspects for breast sagginess. Did you need another reason to quit smoking?
